The Artist

“I do art because I can, and because it’s something I don’t mind failing at - whereas learning to walk again, it did break my heart to fail at something so natural. Mistakes happen naturally, and I can't care about them like I used to…In art I can find a use for my mistakes.”

An eclectic artist, Affiong becomes completely absorbs, losing track of time and surroundings. Her colours are strong and vivid and she will spend whatever time it takes to find exactly the right shade. Her work often grows organically from an initial impulse or idea.

Affiong often returns to themes of climate change and the natural world. Her animals can be incredibly detailed and sensitively rendered or humourously caricatured. “Laughing is very important. Sadness and happiness go hand in hand.”

She describes being acutely connected to and aware of weather patterns: “The climate has such an immediate impact on my physical being. All the breaks in my vertebra used to hurt with changes in the weather. I broke my pelvis. So when it rains my pelvis hurts. Rain causes pain.”

Art has always been an important part of her life, having grown up drawing, painting and having studied photography but “the way I see things has changed. Straight after my brain injury I wouldn’t notice things. Creativity helps me be more aware and more attentive to what’s there.”
